Turkish Coffee in Sand - Heartwarming beverage

Turkish Coffee in Sand - Heartwarming beverage

What makes a Turkish coffee experience complete? Sand. Scorching hot sand.

Besides aesthetics, it simplifies the brewing process, making it almost "automatic".

Unless you make it the "authentic way".

In my experience, coffee brewed in sand is always tasty. Just let the foam rise and serve the coffee immediately. While other heat source requires you to control the foam color and motion to get the balanced flavor.

Coffee in sand nuances

Yes, it's a great way to make Turkish coffee. What makes it less perfect is the time which needed to heat up the sand. Which usually is around 20 minutes (at least 10-15).

While heating up the space (which could be undesirable especially in summer), it also could be hazardous.

Sand temperature

In my observations, the temperature of sand near the heating element reaches 350-600°C or 660-1100°F. But at the top of the surface it is usually around 150°C or 300°F.

It will cool down for around 40-60 minutes or even more after turning off. So be prepared to have a hot surface nearby.

Can I make Sand Coffee on Induction cooktop?

Are you insane? It'll melt the cooktop! It's not a toy! Not to mention, the pot will easily slide on it. Don't even try it, you'll regret!

Can I make Sand coffee using Pot?

I DO NOT recommend it either. First of all, it'll warp due to huge temperature and create an unpleasant sounds. You will not be able to heat up the sand to a proper temperature.

It'll be very dangerous to use and to dig the pot into the sand. Because you can't touch the pot. It'll be hotter than a baking sheet.

Sand heater

Here we go, that's the way. Of course, you can make it outdoors with some charcoal, but we're talking about home environment. And the most practical and safe way is to use special sand heater.

They also heat up outside. Expect it to be 100-130°C or 212-266°F. If you run it long enough.

Some models to consider:

Small Turkish Coffee Sand Heater

Medium Turkish Coffee Sand Heater

The pot (Cezve, Briki, Turkish coffee pot)

It's a tricky part. You'll need some attention here. Because you can use too much force to submerge the cezve into the sand. And the handle may be damaged because of that. It's better to use some spatula or metal spoon to help with the sand distribution.

Yes, maybe it's not the most practical way to make it, but it surely the best in terms of flavor you get. And if you want to have a very special moments in your life - it's a great way to acquire them.
